On the weekend of 28th April to 1st May, 14 cubs from Hillside enjoyed a great weekend celebrating Cub Scout's 90th birthday at Pateley Bridge with the rest of the county. Each district provided activities based on a particular month. Vale of Mowbray with Easingwold and Inglebrough provided activities for January, with new year crafts and "ice" skating.
For our Cub Camp this year we went to Seeonee Lair, Kettleness, an old railway station in East Cleveland District to spend the weekend as Pirates. We took a few tents so some of the Cubs could try sleeping under canvas and for others to complete their Adventure badge.
We had a short hike to Runswick Bay along the coast path. At Runswick Bay we built sand sculptures and hunted for treasure in the form of gold coins which were buried in the sand. Unfortunately between burying the treasure and digging it up the beach had filled up with day trippers so we had to maneuver around wind breaks and beach towels. It took a bit longer to find the treasure than anticipated but each team did find some treasure in the end.
After the treasure hunt we went exploring in the rock pools with 22 cubs all trying to catch the same fish, luckily the fish evaded capture. Then it was off to the cliffs below Kettleness to find fossils which were so abundant it was difficult not to find any. The hard part was trying to keep them in one piece on the journey back to camp. On Sunday we spent the day fully equipping our Pirates with eye patches, swords and hooks.
On Saturday night we were able to watch the sunset over the north sea, not a common sight. Then on Sunday we invested 9 new cubs.
