We had a very mild and sunny day to complete the planting of the trees on our field. With the help of the Thirsk Community Woodlands Group we planted oak, Ash, Hazel, Birch and Hawthorn. In a few years time we should have a useful woodland screen and corridor.

On the weekend of 28th - 30th September we christened our field with the its first camp. This was a group camp with a total of 72 people from beavers, cubs, scouts, leaders and parents taking part. The beavers completed the emergency aid stage one badge and discovery badge. The cubs where able to complete parts of the outdoor challenge and had a go at cooking on real fires, with lots of help from parents. The scouts successfully completed the expedition challenge for which they plotted and mapped their own routes then navigated them successfully. One of the scout leaders received his wood beads after completing all his training. Even the weather was good if a little cold at night.

On 3rd August 2007, 20 people from Hillside went on a day visit to the 21st World Jamboree at Hylands Park in Chelmsford. We had an early start, leaving Thirsk at 5am. We arrived at the Jamboree at 10:30 in hot sunny weather with thousands of other visitors. I was surprised to see so many international scouts had travelled to the jamboree for the day. We met one lady that had spent 6 days travelling from Croatia to spend one day at the Jamboree then taking 6 days to return home, and I thought we had had a long journey. I was very impressed with the Swedish scouts pioneering abilities. I was even able to get my photo taken with Baden-Powell. We found a nice shadey spot to have lunch, taken from around the world, and we were able to meet up with the Explorer Scouts and some of the people who where taking part in the full Jamboree. It was interesting to see the variety of uniforms worn by other scouts. We took part in some of the activities and mixed with many nationalities in the day visitor area. We had a tiring but enjoyable day.

On the 1st August 2007 Hillside Scout Group celebrated its 21st birthday as the scout association celebrated its 100th birthday. The county commissionaire unveiled a plaque dedicated to the lady who bequeathed a large sum of money to us to enable us to buy our own headquarters. We then had a BBQ on the village green with past and present members of the group. The first beaver to join the group and the last beaver to join the group cut the cake.

Over the weekend of 25th to 27th May we took part in the centenary camp celebrations with Ripon District, where we all had a great time despite the rain on Sunday. The scouts learnt a number of new skills and also gained their Outdoor Challenge.

The beavers had fun and were able to gain their outdoor challenge while the cubs competed in a Robin Hood Tournament. The leaders and parents seemed to be having fun too although pitching a tent 9 times could be a little too much fun.

A couple of the older scouts had the opportunity to try their hand at shelter building and sleep in it and although we had some rain overnight they both stayed dry. A few cubs where keen to see how the scouts got on with their shelters and then dressed for their tournament..
